    Ryan Dempster made the successful switch from closer to starter this season, winning 17 games and helping the Chicago Cubs compile the best record in the National League. Once the postseason rolled around, though, Dempster's spring training prediction that the Cubs would win the World Series fell way short when Chicago was swept in the first round for the second consecutive year.

    The Kerry Wood era in Chicago apparently is over.

    General manager Jim Hendry made a two-pronged statement when he traded minor league pitching prospect Jose Ceda to the Marlins for veteran right-handed reliever Kevin Gregg.

    In virtually the same breath, Hendry said he told Wood and his agents that the Cubs would be going in a different direction with their closing situation. Wood, whom the Cubs drafted in 1995, came up in 1998, set the baseball world on fire with a 20-strikeout game that May and was the NL Rookie of the Year.

    Wood battled elbow and shoulder problems over the years, but he came back in 2008 to convert 34 saves in 40 chances.

    The crux of the problem is that the Cubs did not want to give Wood more than a one-year contract or a one-year deal...

  • Hall of Fame schedules replacement game for 2009 (AP)

The inaugural Hall of Fame Classic will be held on June 21,  Father's Day and the first day of summer. It will replace the Hall of Fame game, discontinued this season after 68 years because of scheduling problems.  Robinson,  is president of the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association, is working with the Hall of Fame to put on the Hall of Fame Classic.

    Baseball's legends and old-timers will play in a new Hall of Fame Classic, a creation deemed insufficient by the group opposed to the elimination of the annual exhibition between major league teams. The inaugural Hall of Fame Classic will be held on June 21 -- Father's Day and the first day of summer.

    Joe Maddon took Tampa Bay from last place to first, a few years after Lou Piniella tried to turn that trick himself. But it didn't take Piniella long to find success elsewhere, and both managers were big winners Wednesday. Maddon easily won the American League Manager of the Year award for guiding the Rays from baseball's basement to the World Series.
