Just as Barack Obama fills his Cabinet positions and prepares for the transition of power, the World Series champion Phillies have been re-organizing their front office and coaching staff under new general manager Ruben Amaro Jr.
Amaro hired two assistant general managers (longtime Seattle Mariners executive Benny Looper and longtime Rays staffer Steve Proefrock) and promoted Chuck LaMar to assistant GM. Meanwhile, manager Charlie Manuel dismissed third base coach Steve Smith and was surprised to learn that trusted bench coach Jimy Williams declined an invitation to return for 2009.
"He wasn't upset or nothing," said Manuel, reached by phone in Winter Haven, Fla. "That's not the case at all.
