Having dropped out of the Matt Holliday sweepstakes—which wasn't really the highest priority for them anyway—the Cardinals were concentrating on putting together a new middle infield and adding left-handed relief help as open season for free agents began.
The club is interested in Tigers shortstop Edgar Renteria, a former Cardinal, and possibly in Dodgers shortstop Rafael Furcal as well. At second base, their prime free agent target is the Diamondbacks' Orlando Hudson, although the Cardinals have had talks about retaining infielder Felipe Lopez, who hit .384 for St. Louis in two months this season.
